GHERARDO DELLE NOTTI. QUADRI BIZZARRISSIMI E CENE ALLEGRE

34,00

The catalogue of this Florence exhibition features the work of one of the so-called “Caravaggisti of the North”, Gherardo delle Notti, a master of “candlelit” painting, of evocative nocturnal scenes which gave him the name he is best known by in Italy (his real name being Gerrit van Honthorst, Utrecht 1592-1656). The artist came into contact with Caravaggesque circles in Rome in the 1610s, along with other Dutch artists. This encounter between different “realisms” was decisive for the development of Dutch art, but also highly significant for Italian art. Gherardo was much appreciated by the major art patrons of the time, from Cardinal Scipione Borghese to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo II de’ Medici.
