L’ARTE DI COSTRUIRE UN CAPOLAVORO. LA COLONNA TRAIANA

36,00

Exhibition catalogue, Florence, Uffizi Galleries, Limonaia Grande, Boboli Gardens (18 June 2019 – 6 October 2019). The reconstruction of the extraordinary adventure of the building of Trajan’s Column, illustrated starting from its design and continuing with a review of the techniques and tools used by the men who made it possible. The column was erected in Rome in the 2nd century A.D. by Emperor Trajan following the conquest of Dacia. The catalogue analyses the history and the structure of this masterpiece of Roman art, from a constructional and artistic point of view (a bas-relief narrative of the emperor’s victorious campaigns unfolds along its entire surface). But it also retraces the long journey of the gigantic blocks of marble from the quarries in the Apuan Alps to the ingenious solutions used for bringing them down to the sea intact and their transport on ships to the Column’s construction site in Trajan’s Forum. These events are illustrated in this volume by means of models of the technical devices and lifting and positioning machines used by the Romans. Dozens of spectacular graphic reconstructions illustrate these phases with a rich gallery of images.
