Made around 1440, probably commissioned by Cosimo the Elder as an ornament for the courtyard of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Donatello\u2019s David is believed to have been the first nude sculpture produced since the days of Imperial Rome. With the expulsion of the Medici in 1495 and the ensuing re-foundation of the Florentine Republic, the statue was placed in the seat of government, Palazzo Vecchio, as a symbol of the republican victory.
