ABDUCTION OF A SABINE WOMAN – BLACK

Reproduction of the famous marble statue, work of Giambologna, representing the homonym episode from the ancient Roman mythology.
Handcrafted item made in Tuscany in lost wax bronze casting on a ‘Nero Marquinia’ marble base.
The statue is located under the Loggia dei Lanzi, part of the Gallerie degli Uffizi.

Created between 1579 and 1580 by Giambologna, this sculpture depicts a young girl being lifted up by a young man, who is trapping an older man between his legs. Sources from the time seem to suggest that the artist did not choose a specific theme for the work. The reference to the episode of the abduction of the Sabine women by the Romans is thus probably a later interpretation. With this sculpture, Giambologna aimed to reaffirm his talent, breaking away from the Classic tradition. While sculptures from previous centuries had been designed for frontal viewing, with its spiral structure, The Rape of the Sabine Women should be viewed from all directions.
