Night is one of the statues that form part of the funerary complex of the New Sacristy, inside the Medici Chapels, designed and produced by Michelangelo between 1520 and 1533. Together with Day, its counterpart, it rests upon the tomb of Giuliano, Duke of Nemours. Night is represented as a woman lying, her head reclined downwards and her left leg bent, caught in the act of resting. Together with the other three statues in the New Sacristy – Dawn, Day and Dusk – it represents one of Michelangelo’s Allegories of Time. These subjects were probably conceived by the artist as a symbol of the Medici family’s victory over the inexorable passing of time itself.
