Dawn is one of the statues that form part of the funerary complex of the New Sacristy, inside the Medici Chapels, designed and produced by Michelangelo between 1520 and 1533. Along with Dusk, its counterpart, it rests upon the tomb of Lorenzo Duke of Urbino. Aurora is depicted as a woman about to awaken, resting on one elbow, the other arm bent to remove the veil from her face. Together with the other three statues in the New Sacristy – Day, Night and Dusk – it represents one of Michelangelo’s Allegories of Time. These subjects were probably conceived by the artist as symbols of the Medici family’s victory over the inexorable passing of time itself.
