Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio), born in Urbino to a painter father in 1483, died in Rome in 1520. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, the whole world paid tribute to him with exhibitions, conferences, films and books. Though his life was short, Raphael nevertheless achieved immense fame. He started out in the Marche region, where he began his training, then worked in Umbria, Tuscany and finally Rome, at the papal court of Julius II. He was a skilled draughtsman, painter and architect. His airy painting, the elegant and linear composition, the legendary harmony of proportions and colour made his creations extremely popular: from the famous Madonnas to portraits, to the undisputed masterpieces of the frescoes in the Vatican Rooms. This large-format book is dedicated to his life, his loves, and the birth of his myth, which has endured to this day, with a sensational array of illustrations. The book is divided into two separate sections in terms of graphics, the use of different types of paper and its contents, the first of which is historical and critical, while the second features in-depth studies and interpretations of works and details.
